The Centre in collaboration with Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) is creating an e-repository to document the mechanisms for providing legal aid for persons in police custody (LAPPC) on paper– in the form of frameworks / rules / procedures. The first phase of the project was completed in November 2020 and focused on identifying the countries having a mechanism for LAPPC.
Contribution to SDG/UNAI Principles: The research done will be incorporated in a report which will be put out on a public domain. It’s main aim is to list down the best practices of legal aid provided to persons in police custody so that this helps the policy makers in drafting a similar framework for India as well. It will contribute to safeguarding right to life and right to fair trial as well as improving awareness in the society.
