The Police Custody Deaths Monitor is CHRI’s police reform programme’s initiative to document deaths in police custody in India.

The Police Custody Deaths Monitor is CHRI’s police reform programme’s initiative to document deaths in police custody in India. The documentation is based mostly on secondary sources (media articles). Student researchers collected data from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan for the period of July – December 2021. This documentation was shared periodically in the form of news articles and the final report for the year was prepared by February 2022.
Contribution to SDG/UNAI Principles: The monitor is an effort to provide in an easy and understandable manner, the current issues associated with police custody. It aims to improve awareness surrounding the rights of people who are taken into custody. The report produced will be disseminated in the public domain and will help in bringing into forefront the issue of police custody violence.
